Mobile Internet is the fastest growing segment of cellular communications. The quantity of active mobile Internet users in St. Petersburg in 2009 grew up by 150%
and is close now to 1 million subscribers. Last year on the mobile Internet service cellular operators have made about 3 billion rubles. “We could not stay away from the brightest market trend in 2009 - the rapid development of Wireless Internet, and therefore decided to do this study. The result was a unique product for the region, which contains not only classical market indicators on each page distributed by each market player, but also the data obtained by our own survey*, providing the complete picture of the preferences of end users”, - said RusTele.Com CEO Yuri Bryukvin. In particular, RusTele.Com survey showed that 55% of respondents are satisfied with the speed of mobile Internet access and only 16% consider it being “too slow”. The most active subscribers use mobile Internet to access email, social networks and online news.Nearly a half of Mobile Internet subscribers use the service on a daily basis. Over 10% of respondents use Mobile Internet as their only means to access the Web and do not have any access via wired technology.
In 2010, cellular companies will put even more serious competitive pressure on wired providers - the number of active users of Mobile Internet is close to the number of households with wired Internet. At the same time earning yield in both segments have almost evened out. Devices for Mobile Internet will get cheaper, the cost of services to cellular companies will decrease, thus intensifying the competition between technologies.
