Moscow, Feb 20, 2012 (RosBusinessConsulting) -- MTS and Rostelecom have agreed to jointly use and expand fixed-line and mobile telecommunications networks, RBC Daily reported today, citing spokespersons for both operators. The companies also intend to jointly maintain and repair their networks.
The agreement will provide MTS with an access on favorable terms to Rostelecom's fiber-optic trunk network in those regions where MTS' network has no full coverage, for instance some areas in Siberia, Far East, the republics of Komi and Sakha (Yakutia), MTS spokeswoman Valeriya Kuzmenko said. Rostelecom is interested in MTS' mobile network. MTS plans to further develop 3G and build LTE networks in 2012 and the cooperation agreement will enable it to cut investments in the construction of trunk channels, she added.
MTS has a similar agreement with mobile operator VimpelCom, while Rostelecom with Russian WiMAX operator Scartel, which operates under the Yota brand.
